How It Works

This tool converts Word documents to PDF entirely in your browser using two JavaScript libraries: mammoth extracts raw text from the .docx file, and pdf-lib constructs a new PDF from scratch — no server, no upload, no cloud service involved.

    mammoth parses the .docx
    Word's .docx format is a ZIP archive of XML files. mammoth unpacks and traverses that XML in-browser, pulling out the raw text content without needing any server-side Office installation.

    Text is sanitized to WinAnsi
    pdf-lib's built-in Helvetica and Helvetica-Bold fonts only cover the WinAnsi (CP1252) character set. Before layout begins, a local toWinAnsi pass strips or simplifies characters outside that range — diacritics are approximated, unsupported scripts (Arabic, CJK, etc.) are flagged with a visible warning.

    pdf-lib lays out pages with word-wrap
    pdf-lib creates a blank PDF at your chosen page size (Letter or A4), then a custom word-wrap loop measures each word's pixel width using the font's metrics, breaks lines when they exceed the text column, and adds new pages as needed. Short lines at paragraph starts that look like headings are rendered in bold at font-size+2.

    PDF is saved and downloaded
    pdf-lib serialises the finished document to a byte array in memory, which is wrapped in a Blob and handed to the browser's download API — the file is never transmitted anywhere.

Your document is read and converted entirely inside your browser tab; neither the file contents nor the extracted text are ever sent to a server.
