How do I check what type a file really is if the extension is wrong?

Drop the file into the Hex Viewer. It compares the first bytes against known magic-number signatures and shows the result next to Detected, such as PNG image or PDF document. It also warns if the file name's extension does not match the content.

How much of a large file does the hex viewer show?

It reads the file in 64 KB pages and shows one page at a time, so large files do not need to load fully. Use Previous, Next or Jump to offset to move around; the Showing range tells you where you are.

How do I search for text or a byte sequence in a file?

Use Find and pick Text or Hex bytes in Search type. For hex, enter two digits per byte, such as 50 4b 03 04. The search covers the whole file, not just the page on screen, and you can press Cancel on long files.

How do I copy bytes or read a value from a hex dump?

Click a byte to open the Byte inspector, which shows hex, unsigned and signed decimal, binary and character values. Shift+click extends the selection, and Copy selection copies it as a Hex dump or a Raw hex string.

What do the columns and dots in the hex dump mean?

Each row shows the offset, 8, 16 or 32 bytes in hex (set with Bytes per row), and their ASCII text. Bytes that are not printable characters appear as a dot in the ASCII column.
