How are the colours chosen?

Each colour gets a random hue from 0 to 359 degrees, a saturation from 35 to 95 percent and a lightness from 25 to 80 percent, drawn with crypto.getRandomValues. The limits keep out washed-out greys, near-black and glaring near-white, so most results are usable colours.

How do I keep a colour and change the rest?

Press the lock button on a swatch. "Generate" and the Space key then only replace the unlocked colours. Press the button again to unlock. Switching between "Single" and "Palette of 5" keeps the colours you already have.

How do I copy a colour code?

Each swatch has three buttons with its HEX, RGB and HSL values. Press one to copy that exact text to your clipboard, for example #1A2B3C, rgb(26, 43, 60) or hsl(210, 40%, 18%). The text on each swatch is black or white, whichever has the better WCAG contrast against it.

How do I save the palette?

"Download PNG" saves an image with all current colours side by side and their HEX codes. "Download CSS" saves a file with a :root block of custom properties, --color-1 to --color-5, in lower-case HEX, ready to paste into a stylesheet.

The last 12 sets of colours are listed under "History" while the page is open. Press one to bring it back, which unlocks its colours. History is cleared when you close or reload the page, and nothing is uploaded.

Yes. Every tool is free to use, with no account and no credit card. The work runs on your device rather than on our servers, which is what keeps it free to run.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. It runs in current mobile browsers on iOS and Android, with nothing to install.
