Calendar and date options

Applied to today's Hijri date and to the birth date. Use it if your country's moon sighting differs from the calendar by a day.

Leave on today, or pick any date to get the age on that day.

Note: Ages use the civil Umm al-Qura calendar (1356-1500 AH, 1937-2077 CE), which may differ by +/-1 day from the local moon-sighting date. Dates outside that table use the tabular Islamic calendar and are approximate (+/-1 to 2 days). Use it for everyday age and birthdays, not for religious determination of dates.

Need to convert a single date instead? Try the Hijri Date Converter.

Using the Solar Hijri (Shamsi / Jalali) calendar used in Iran and Afghanistan instead? That is a different calendar from the lunar Hijri (Qamari). Try the Persian (Solar Hijri) Date Converter.

🌙 All calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth date never leaves your device.

How It Works

This tool computes your age using the Islamic (Hijri) calendar based on the official Umm al-Qura civil calendar, so it correctly accounts for the lunar year being about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. Enter your birth date in either calendar and get your exact Hijri age, the weekday you were born, and the days until your next Hijri birthday.

  1. 1
    Choose your input calendar
Toggle between entering your birth date as a Gregorian date or as a Hijri (AH) date using the day, month name and year fields.
  2. 2
    Enter your date of birth
Pick the date. The tool instantly resolves it in both calendars and recomputes your age live as you type.
  3. 3
    Read your Hijri age
See your age in Hijri years, months and days with the correct month-length borrow, plus the total number of days you have lived.
  4. 4
See your born weekday and next birthday
View the day of the week you were born (in English and Arabic) and a countdown of days to your next Hijri birthday, including the age you will turn.
  5. 5
    Copy or compare
Copy a plain-text summary with one click, switch on Arabic-Indic numerals, or jump to the Hijri Date Converter for single-date conversions.

Everything runs entirely in your browser using the device's built-in Umm al-Qura calendar. Your birth date is never uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere.

Guide

Worked example

The page opens with 2000-01-01 already in "Gregorian date of birth". To reproduce the numbers below, open "Calendar and date options" and set "Age as of" to 2026-11-05. The card headed "Age as of 5 November 2026 CE" shows 27 years, 8 months and 1 day, with "Gregorian age: 26 years, 10 months, 4 days" under it and "9805 days lived". "Born (Hijri)" reads "24 Ramadan 1420 AH" over "1 January 2000 CE", "Day of the week born" reads "Saturday", and "Next Hijri birthday" reads "118 days", "24 Ramadan 1448 AH - turning 28" and "3 March 2027 CE". Now choose "Tabular (Kuwaiti algorithm)": the age becomes 27 years, 8 months and 0 days, because that calendar puts 5 November 2026 one day earlier, and an amber note begins "Approximate".

Which settings to use, and the limits

  • Pick the calendar and the moon-sighting shift. Under "Calendar and date options", "Umm al-Qura (Saudi civil)" is the default and uses the browser's built-in table for 1356 to 1500 AH, which is 14 March 1937 to 16 November 2077. Outside that table, or if you choose "Tabular (Kuwaiti algorithm)", an arithmetical calendar is used and an amber note says "Approximate (+/-1 to 2 days)". "Moon-sighting adjustment" offers "-1 day (one day earlier)", "None (calendar date)" and "+1 day (one day later)". It moves the birth date and the as-of date together, so use it only if your country's sighting differs from the calendar by a day.
  • Enter a Hijri birth date directly. Press "Hijri (AH)" under "Enter birth date as" to get "Day", "Month" and "Year (AH)". The month list reads like "9. Ramadan (رمضان)". The boxes start at 24 Ramadan 1420, which is 1 January 2000. Years from 1000 to 1600 AH are accepted, and days from 1 to 30. The card "Born (Hijri)" shows the matching Gregorian date underneath. If you were born on the 30th, the birthday moves to the 29th in years when that month has only 29 days.
  • Ask for the age on any date. Under "Age as of" pick any date, or leave it on today. The card heading changes from "Your Hijri age" to "Age as of" followed by that date, and "Use today" appears to put it back. This suits a school entry date or a document deadline. The birth date must not be later than the chosen date. The age is given in whole Hijri years, months and days, with the Gregorian age and "days lived" under it. A Hijri year is about 11 days shorter, so the Hijri age runs ahead by about a year every 33 Gregorian years.
  • Compare a family in one table. "Family list" starts with two rows and takes up to 30 people. Each row has a name of up to 60 characters, a choice of "Gregorian" or "Hijri (AH)", and the date, and it uses the calendar options and "Age as of" date set above. A valid row shows the Hijri age, the Gregorian age and the next Hijri birthday. "Copy table" copies tab-separated text for a spreadsheet, and "Download CSV" saves hijri-ages.csv. Names that start with =, +, - or @ get a leading apostrophe so a spreadsheet does not treat them as formulas.
  • Put the next ten birthdays in your calendar. "Add next 10 birthdays (.ics)" saves a file such as hijri-birthdays-1420-9-24.ics. It holds ten separate all-day events titled like "Hijri birthday (turning 28)", each with a reminder one day before. They are separate because a Hijri birthday falls about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year, so a yearly repeat cannot work: for the example above, made on 5 November 2026, the first two land on 3 March 2027 and 20 February 2028. The list starts from today, not from the "Age as of" date. On an iPhone or iPad the file goes to the share sheet or opens for you to save, rather than downloading silently.
  • Copy, share or switch the digits. "Copy summary" copies the Hijri age, Gregorian age, total days and next birthday as text under the heading "Hijri Age", with the optional "Name (optional)" added. The name is not saved and not put in the share link. "Share result" copies a link that carries the birth date, the calendar option, the adjustment and the "Age as of" date after the # in the address. Tick "Arabic-Indic numerals" to show the numbers in the answer as ٠١٢٣.

Common problems and how to fix them

It says "Please enter a valid date between 1000 and 1600 AH (about 1591-2174 CE)."
One message covers every out-of-range case: a Hijri year outside 1000 to 1600, a Hijri day above 30, a Gregorian birth date earlier than about 1591, and an "Age as of" date later than about 2174. A day such as 31 gets the same year-range wording, so look at the day box first. Then check the "Age as of" date under "Calendar and date options", which is easy to forget once it has been set.
It says "Muharram 1445 AH has only 29 days - choose a day between 1 and 29."
You entered day 30 for a month that has 29 days. Hijri months have 29 or 30 days, and the count depends on the calendar: in the Umm al-Qura table Muharram 1445 has 29 days and Safar 1445 has 30, while the tabular calendar gives Safar 1445 only 29. The message names the month and year you entered. Use day 29, check the month and year, or try the other option under "Calendar".
It says the birth date is in the future, or after the "Age as of" date.
The birth date is later than the date the age is measured on. That date is today unless "Age as of" holds another date; then the message names that date instead of today. Open "Calendar and date options" and press "Use today", or pick a later "Age as of" date. A birth date equal to the chosen date is accepted.
Nothing appears below the birth date and there is no error message.
The result card is shown only when the birth date is complete. An empty or half-typed "Gregorian date of birth", a blank "Day" or "Year (AH)" box, or a year with more than four digits counts as incomplete, and incomplete input shows no message. Fill every box. In "Family list" a half-filled row is also left blank, while a complete but invalid row shows "Enter a valid birth date on or before the as-of date (within 1000-1600 AH)."
It says "Approximate (+/-1 to 2 days): part of this calculation falls outside the Umm al-Qura table (1356-1500 AH), so the tabular Islamic calendar is used there."
One of the dates in the calculation, the birth date, the "Age as of" date or the next birthday, falls before 14 March 1937 or after 16 November 2077. The next birthday counts too, so an "Age as of" date in 2077 can trigger it. The result is still shown, but it can be a day or two off. For an old birth date that must be exact, use the date on an official document.

How it compares

This calculator gives an age, a birthday countdown and calendar reminders from one birth date, which a plain date converter does not; for converting any single date the page links to the "Hijri Date Converter". It follows the civil Umm al-Qura table, so it can differ by one day from the date announced after local moon sighting, and the page says it is for everyday age and birthdays, not a religious ruling. The "Moon-sighting adjustment" is a one-day shift, not a lookup of local announcements. Dates before 1937 or after 2077 use an arithmetical calendar and are approximate. The birth date stays in your browser unless you share the link.
