How do I make a beat?

Press a step in a row to switch it on, and press "Play". The grid has 8 rows (Kick, Snare, Clap, Closed hi-hat, Open hi-hat, Tom, Rim shot and Cowbell) and 16 steps, which is one bar of sixteenth notes. Press "Rock", "Hip-hop", "House" or "Bossa nova" under "Start from" to load a ready-made pattern, or "Clear pattern" to begin empty.

What do tempo, swing and the volume and mute controls do?

Tempo runs from 60 to 200 BPM and can be changed while the beat plays. Swing delays every second step: 0% is straight, about 67% gives a triplet feel and 100% delays them by half a step. Each row has a volume slider and an "M" button that mutes it. A closed hi-hat cuts off a ringing open hi-hat, as on a real machine.

Are the drums samples?

No. Every drum is built in your browser from WebAudio oscillators, filtered noise and envelopes, so there are no sound files to download. Notes are queued a fraction of a second ahead on the audio clock by a look-ahead scheduler, which keeps the timing steady even if the page is busy. The beat stops when you switch to another tab.

How do I save patterns and export audio?

Type a name under "Saved patterns" and press "Save pattern". Up to 20 patterns are kept in this browser's local storage, and "Load" brings one back. To export, choose a length of 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars, press "Render audio", then choose WAV or MP3 and press the download button. The render is done on your device.

Will the exported file loop cleanly?

Yes. The file is exactly the chosen number of bars long, and any sound still ringing at the end, such as an open hi-hat or a cowbell, is mixed back into the start, so repeating the file has no gap or click. Change the pattern and the page asks you to render again.
