How do I split a restaurant bill and tip between friends?

Enter the Bill amount, choose a Tip percentage preset (10, 15, 18, 20, 22 or 25) or type a Custom %, then set Split between. The Each person pays figure includes that person's share of the tip.

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Enter the Tax amount (optional) and keep Tip on the pre-tax amount ticked to base the tip on the bill minus tax. Untick it to tip on the full bill including tax.

How many people can I split the bill between?

The Split between control goes from 1 to 20 people, using the plus and minus buttons. Uneven cents are shown as a split such as some people paying one amount and others one cent more.

What does Round up per-person total to nearest cent do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next smallest currency unit, so the group pays slightly more than the exact total. The displayed tip is adjusted so the bill plus tip equals the rounded total.

Can I use a currency other than dollars?

Yes. The Currency dropdown offers 15 currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY and INR, with locale formatting; JPY shows no decimals. Your choice is remembered in your browser. The custom tip must be 0 to 100 percent.

Yes. Every tool is free to use, with no account and no credit card. The work runs on your device rather than on our servers, which is what keeps it free to run.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. It runs in current mobile browsers on iOS and Android, with nothing to install.

How It Works

All calculation runs locally in your browser using plain arithmetic and the browser's built-in Intl.NumberFormat API — no server, no network request, no external library. Intl.NumberFormat handles currency symbol placement and decimal rules (for example, JPY displays zero decimal places while USD displays two), so results are formatted correctly regardless of which currency you select.

1
Enter bill, tax, and tip
You type the bill total and optional tax amount. If a tax figure is present, a checkbox lets you tip on the pre-tax subtotal — the code subtracts the tax from the bill before computing the tip base, matching the convention used in many US states.
2
Tip percentage applied
Selecting a preset (10–25%) or typing a custom percentage triggers a useMemo recalculation: tip = tipBase × (percentage / 100). A custom value is clamped to 0–100 and validated client-side with no server round-trip.
3
Split and rounding resolved
For group splits the tool divides the total into per-person shares using integer-unit arithmetic (multiplying by 10^decimals, using Math.floor and the modulo remainder) so that uneven cents are distributed penny-exactly — showing, for example, '3 people pay $12.33 and 1 person pays $12.34'. The optional round-up mode applies Math.ceil to each person's share instead.
4
Formatted output via Intl.NumberFormat
Every monetary value is passed through an Intl.NumberFormat instance configured with your selected currency and the page locale. The formatter's resolvedOptions().maximumFractionDigits drives the integer-unit precision, ensuring the split math and the display format stay in sync.
