Free Hearing Test

Play tones from 20 Hz to 20 kHz to find the highest and lowest sounds you can hear, and check your left and right speakers. Not a medical test.

This is not a medical hearing test. It cannot find or rule out hearing loss, and it is not a substitute for a test by a doctor or audiologist. If you are worried about your hearing, see a professional.

Play pure tones and tell the page whether you can hear them. The sweep finds the highest and the lowest tone you can hear, and the channel check plays sound from the left or right side only.

Before you start

Turn your volume down first.

Set your device or system volume to a low level before you press the button, and wear headphones or sit at your usual distance from the speakers. Tones start quiet. Raise the volume slowly only if you cannot hear a tone you should, and stop if anything is uncomfortable.

Frequency range

Tones step through the range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz on a log scale. Each tone plays for a moment. Say whether you heard it, and the test stops at the first tone you cannot hear.

Press "I have turned my volume down. Enable sound" above to unlock the tones.

Left and right check

Play a tone on one side at a time. The sound should come only from the side named.

If both sides sound the same when one is playing, or the sides are swapped, check the balance setting, the cable and the connection.

What affects the result

  • Headphones and speakers limit what can be heard. Many cannot play the very lowest or highest tones, however good your hearing is. Use the same device when you compare results.
  • Background noise hides quiet tones. Test in a quiet room.
  • The tones are capped well below the loudest level on purpose. If you cannot hear a tone, raise your device volume a little at a time instead of pushing everything to the maximum.
  • Changes in hearing, ringing in the ears, or pain should be checked by a doctor or audiologist, not with this page.

How It Works

The page makes pure tones with WebAudio, sends them to your speakers at a capped volume, and asks whether you heard each one.

  1. 1
    Turn the volume down
Set your system volume low, then press "Enable sound". The tone volume slider is capped well below the maximum.
  2. 2
    Find your upper limit
Press "Find my upper limit" and answer for each tone from 8 kHz up to 20 kHz. The last tone you heard before the first "no" is your limit.
  3. 3
    Find your lower limit
Press "Find my lower limit" for tones from 250 Hz down to 20 Hz. Small speakers may not play the lowest ones.
  4. 4
    Check left and right
Press "Play left" and "Play right" to confirm each side plays on its own.

Tones are generated in your browser tab. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded.
