How It Works
This tool cleans the soundtrack of a video in your browser, using the same noise-removal engine as our Background Noise Remover: an on-device AI speech model (DeepFilterNet3) for voices, or classic filters for steady noise. The picture is never re-encoded: it is copied into the new file exactly as it was.
- 1The video is read in placeThe file is opened without being copied into memory, so a large phone video costs little. Its streams are checked first: a video with no sound, or a file that is only audio, is flagged before you press anything.
- 2Pick the kind of noise and hear it firstVoice (AI) is for people talking over wind, traffic or a busy room; Hiss & hum is for steady noise such as fans or hum; Learn the noise removes exactly what it hears in a noise-only moment. A 15-second preview runs the same processing the full video will get.
- 3Only the sound is rebuiltThe audio is filtered, brought back to the original's loudness if you keep that option on, and encoded to AAC (Opus in WebM). The video track is copied as it is, so resolution, frame rate and quality do not change.
- 4A file your phone can playAn iPhone MOV comes back as MOV, an MP4 as MP4 and a WebM as WebM. Other containers become MP4 when the picture allows. Cancel stops the work at once.
Your video never leaves your device. The audio engine and the speech model are served from this site's own servers, and the file is only read inside your browser.
Guide
Worked example
Press "Try a noisy sample video". The tool builds a 12-second clip called noisy-sample-video.mp4, a still picture over music with tape hiss and mains hum mixed in, and sets the noise type to "Hiss & hum" for you. "Strength" starts at 80%, shown as "80% · Medium", and "Match original loudness" is ticked. Press "Preview 15 seconds", then switch between "Cleaned" and "Original" while it plays; the clip is only 12 seconds, so all of it plays. Press "Remove noise from video". The bar says "Removing noise…", and the result line reads "Hiss & hum · 80% · MP4 · ", then the new size, then "picture copied untouched". The button changes to "Download video", and the file is named noisy-sample-video_denoised.mp4. Above the player, "Cleaned" and "Original" swap the sound at the same moment in the video.
Which settings to use, and the limits
- Pick the noise type before the strength. Under "What kind of noise?", "Voice (AI)" is the default for your own files. It runs an AI speech model on your device and, in the page's words, "treats music as noise", so it suits talking, not songs. "Hiss & hum" is a filter for steady noise such as tape hiss, mains hum, fans and air conditioning, and it is safe on any material. "Learn the noise" is for steady noise under speech or music: give it a stretch with only the noise in "Noise starts (s)" and "Noise ends (s)". They start at 0 and 2, move in 0.1 steps and keep at least 0.2 seconds between them.
- Set the strength by listening, and keep loudness matching on. The "Strength" slider runs from 5% to 100% in steps of 1 and starts at 80%. The buttons "Light · 50%", "Medium · 80%" and "Strong · 100%" jump to fixed points. Higher removes more noise but can sound flat. Cleaning lowers the volume, so "Match original loudness" is ticked by default. It compares the first minute of the original and the cleaned sound and raises the result by the difference, by at most 12 dB and with a limiter so it cannot clip. A difference under 0.3 dB is ignored.
- Preview first; it uses the same filter as the final run. "Preview 15 seconds" cleans a 15-second piece from the middle of the soundtrack's first minute (from the very start for "Learn the noise") and plays it. Switch between "Cleaned" and "Original" without losing your place. With loudness matching on, the two takes are matched, so you compare the noise, not the volume. While the preview is being made, the button reads "Cancel". Changing the noise type, the strength or the loudness option throws the old preview away. Only the first minute of the sound is decoded for it, however long the video is.
- Expect an untouched picture and a re-encoded soundtrack. The picture is copied, never re-encoded, so it keeps its full quality and the job is quick. Only the first picture track and the first sound track are kept, so extra audio tracks and subtitles are not carried over. The cleaned sound is written as AAC at 192 kbps, or Opus at 160 kbps in a WebM. MOV stays MOV, MP4, M4V and 3GP become MP4, and WebM stays WebM, each as long as the picture codec fits that container. MKV and AVI files become MP4 when the picture is H.264, H.265, MPEG-4 or AV1. Anything that does not fit goes to MKV. The file is named like clip_denoised.mp4.
- Know the size limits before a long video. The video is read from disk without being copied, so a big file alone does not stop you. Above 800 MB (400 MB if the browser reports 4 GB of memory or less, 150 MB on a phone) the page warns "This file is 900 MB. Large files are slow in the browser and can run out of memory. If it fails, try a shorter clip." The cleaned file is built in memory, so if it would be over about 1.75 GB the button is held and a message offers to trim or compress first. A risky run first shows "This may be too much for this device".
- Plan for a one-time download. The first run loads the media engine, about 31 MB, which the browser keeps. "Voice (AI)" also needs its model. The card says "This tool runs an AI model on your device. One-time download:" followed by a size, and has a "Load model" button. Pressing it, or "Remove noise from video", downloads the model and then starts cleaning. Later visits show "Model already downloaded - nothing to fetch." "Hiss & hum" needs no model. On a phone the card adds "On a phone this will be slow - expect several minutes, and keep this tab open." Your video is never uploaded.
Common problems and how to fix them
- It says "Could not play the preview here. You can still process the whole file."
- This one message covers every failure while the 15-second preview is being made: reading the soundtrack, loading the AI model or running the filter. Running out of memory is one known cause, and a phone has the least to spare. The preview is optional, and the full run is a separate job that checks memory first and warns you. Try "Hiss & hum", which needs no model, or a shorter clip. A used-up engine is replaced by a fresh one when it is next needed.
- It says "Could not load the AI voice model. Check your connection and try again, or choose Hiss & hum, which needs no download."
- This appears for any failure while "Voice (AI)" is getting ready, before your sound is touched, so it is not always the network. A device that runs out of memory while loading the model also ends up here. Try once more. If it fails again, choose "Hiss & hum". A browser that cannot run the model at all shows "This browser cannot run the AI model, so Voice uses the classic RNNoise filter instead. It is lighter but removes less noise." and uses that filter.
- It says "Processing cancelled." in small grey text, with no red box.
- You pressed "Cancel" beside the progress bar. It stops the run at once and ends the engine, so no result is made. If you cancelled during a first download, the download may carry on in the background and make the next try quicker. Press "Remove noise from video" again; the engine is normally loaded again from the browser's cache.
- It says "This video has no audio track to clean."
- The page checks the tracks when you add the file ("Checking the video…"). A video with no sound is flagged at once and the button is held, because there is nothing to clean. The opposite case, a file with sound but no picture, shows "This file has no picture, only sound. The Background Noise Remover cleans audio files." with a "Remove noise" button that sends it there. If the check cannot read either track, the page lets the run decide.
- It says "Could not clean this video's sound. The file may be damaged, or its audio may be in a format the in-browser engine cannot read."
- This is the catch-all for a failure during the clean-up itself, after the engine and model are ready. A damaged or half-copied file, an unusual audio format, or the browser running out of memory in the middle of the run can all end here. Try the original file again, try "Hiss & hum", or cut the video shorter in the Video Trimmer first. If the file moved or changed since you picked it, you see "This file changed or moved after you picked it — please choose it again." instead.
How it compares
This tool changes only the sound of a video. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so it loses no quality, and for an audio file the Background Noise Remover is the better choice. One setting is applied to the whole soundtrack: it cannot treat one stretch differently, mute a single noise, choose another audio track or keep extra tracks. "Voice (AI)" is built for speech and thins out music, so use "Hiss & hum" on songs. The preview covers 15 seconds from the first minute, so noise later in a long video is not heard before you commit. For work on one section or one sound, use an editor on your computer. In exchange nothing is installed, and the video is processed in your browser.
