💡 A cup of flour and a cup of honey weigh very differently — gram conversions only work if you account for ingredient density. That's why baking by weight is far more reliable than by volume.

Common uses

  • Convert Cups to GramsTurn US cup measurements into accurate grams using ingredient density.
  • Convert Oven TemperaturesSwitch between °F, °C, and UK gas marks for any recipe.
  • Convert Baking MeasurementsGet precise gram weights for flour, sugar, butter, and more.
  • Convert US Recipes to MetricTranslate cups, tablespoons, and ounces into grams and millilitres.
  • Scale Recipes Up or DownConvert awkward fractional amounts into easy-to-measure weights.

How It Works

All conversion math runs directly in your browser using two hand-written lookup tables and React's useMemo hook — no library, no server call. The key distinction from most cooking converters is that volume-to-weight conversions use per-ingredient density values (g/mL), so "1 cup of flour" and "1 cup of honey" correctly produce very different gram counts.

  1. 1
    Ingredient density lookup
The tool stores 19 ingredients with their real density in grams per millilitre — for example, all-purpose flour at 0.529 g/mL, honey at 1.42 g/mL, and butter at 0.911 g/mL. These values are hardcoded constants in this tool, not fetched from an API.
  2. 2
    Volume-to-millilitre normalisation
Your input unit (cup, tbsp, tsp, fl oz, ml, or litre) is multiplied by that unit's exact millilitre equivalent (e.g. 1 cup = 236.588 ml, 1 tbsp = 14.7868 ml) to produce an intermediate ml value. If you are converting weight-to-volume, the gram input is divided by the ingredient's density instead.
  3. 3
    Simultaneous multi-unit output
Once the intermediate ml and gram values are known, the tool derives all output units in a single useMemo computation — grams, ounces, ml, cups, tbsp, tsp, and fl oz are all displayed at once so you never need to re-run the conversion for a different unit.
  4. 4
    Oven temperature tab
A separate tab converts between Fahrenheit, Celsius, and UK gas marks using the standard linear formulas (°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9) and a 9-row reference table spanning Gas Mark 1 (275 °F) to Gas Mark 9 (475 °F). The nearest gas mark is found by scanning the table for the smallest absolute difference from the entered temperature.
