How do I record a video with my webcam?

Press "Start camera" and allow access, then choose the camera, the microphone and the resolution (360p, 720p or 1080p). Press "Record"; after the countdown (3 seconds by default, or Off, 5 or 10) the red REC timer starts. Press "Stop recording" and the video appears under "Your recording", where you can play it and press "Download WebM" or "Download MP4".

Can I pause and carry on in the same video?

Yes. Press "Pause" while recording and "Resume" to continue. The timer and the saved video skip the paused time. Unticking "Record sound from the microphone" while recording mutes the sound for the rest of the take, and ticking it again unmutes.

Which formats can I save, and why is MP4 sometimes greyed out?

The page asks your browser which formats its recorder can write and only enables those. WebM is the default; the "MP4" button works when the browser can record H.264 MP4, which recent Chrome, Edge and Safari can. If only WebM is available, the page says so and links to the Video Converter, which turns the WebM into an MP4 on your device.

How big will the video file be?

The recorder asks for about 1 Mbps at 360p, 2.5 Mbps at 720p and 5 Mbps at 1080p, plus 128 kbps when sound is on. That is roughly 8 MB, 19 MB and 37 MB per minute with sound, and the page shows the running size while you record. A take stops and is saved by itself when it reaches 1 GB. Your camera may deliver a smaller picture than you asked for; the real size is shown next to the preview.

Is my recording uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. Video and sound are recorded and kept in your browser tab. The takes under "Takes from this visit" stay in memory (the newest 8) and are gone when you reload or leave the page, so download the ones you want. The camera and microphone are switched off when you press "Stop camera" and when you leave the page.

How It Works
