How It Works

The conversion is done entirely in your browser by a hand-written Markdown parser β€” no third-party library, no server request. The parser walks the source line-by-line, applying block-level rules (headings, lists, tables, fenced code) and then a second pass of inline regex patterns for bold, italic, links, images, and inline code.

  1. 1
    Block structure parsed first
The parser reads the raw Markdown line by line, identifying block-level constructs: fenced code blocks (with optional language class), ATX headings (# through ######), blockquotes, ordered and unordered lists including GFM task-list checkboxes, GFM tables with column alignment, horizontal rules, and paragraphs that correctly join soft-wrapped continuation lines.
  2. 2
Inline patterns applied inside each block
After each block's text is HTML-escaped, a regex chain in parseInline() transforms inline syntax: images and links (with URL scheme whitelisting that strips javascript: and data: hrefs), **bold**, *italic*, ~~strikethrough~~, and inline code β€” in that precedence order.
  3. 3
Live HTML output with preview toggle
The HTML string is recomputed via useMemo on every keystroke, so the right-hand pane updates instantly. A toggle switches between the raw HTML source view and a rendered preview using the browser's own layout engine.
  4. 4
Three output options including rich-text copy
You can copy the raw HTML markup, download a complete standalone .html file with DOCTYPE and charset meta tag, or use 'Copy rich text' β€” which writes both text/html and text/plain MIME types to the clipboard via the Clipboard API's ClipboardItem, so the formatted result pastes directly into Gmail, Google Docs, or Word without extra steps.
