Free Keyboard Tester
Test every key on your keyboard: each key lights up as you press it, with its key and code values, a key log, and a warning if a key stays down.
Click the keyboard below, then press keys on your physical keyboard. Each key lights up while it is down and stays green once it has been tested.
Click here to start testing. Keys are only captured while this area is selected.
Press Esc three times quickly, or click outside this area, to stop capturing keys.
Key log
- Key presses and releases appear here.
Some keys cannot be detected by any web page. The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard itself, and media, brightness and volume keys, the Windows or Command key and shortcuts such as Alt+Tab are often taken by the operating system or the browser first. If a key does nothing here but works in other programs, that is usually why.
Ghosting: a browser only sees the keys the keyboard reports. Hold several keys at once and compare the number you are pressing with "Most keys held at once". A lower number means the keyboard dropped some of them.
A physical keyboard is needed. On a phone or tablet this only works with a connected USB or Bluetooth keyboard; the on-screen keyboard of the device is not read.
⌨️ Key presses are read in this tab only and are never recorded, stored or uploaded.
How It Works
The page listens for key presses while the test area is selected and shows what your browser reports for each one.
- 1Click the test areaClick the keyboard diagram so it is selected. While it is selected, keys are captured so the page does not scroll or jump away.
- 2Press your keysEach key lights up while it is down and turns green once it has been tested. The key, code and location values of the latest key are shown beside the count of tested keys.
- 3Watch for problemsA key held for more than 3 seconds turns red, a key whose release never arrived is flagged, and the highest number of keys held at once is tracked to help spot ghosting.
- 4Reset and repeatClick "Reset" to clear the tested keys and the log and start again. Press Esc three times quickly to stop capturing keys.
Key presses are read in your browser tab only. Nothing you press is recorded, stored or uploaded.
