Free Refresh Rate Test

Find out your screen's real refresh rate in Hz, see how many frames are dropped, and compare smoothness with a moving test pattern.

The page counts how often your browser can draw a new frame for about 3 seconds and works out your screen's refresh rate from the middle frame time. Keep this tab in front and leave the mouse still while it runs.

Measured refresh rate

Smoothness pattern

Watch the bars move. On a higher refresh rate screen the motion looks smoother and less blurred, and the fast bar is easier to follow.

Slow: 480 pixels per second
Fast: 1440 pixels per second

The position is calculated from the time of each frame, so it moves at the same speed on every screen. Only the number of steps per second changes. The pattern stops while a measurement runs.

Why the number can be lower than your screen's rating

  • Battery saver and low power modes can lower the refresh rate or limit animation to 30 or 60 Hz. Plug in the charger and turn them off to test the full rate.
  • Browsers slow or pause animation in a background tab or a minimised window, so measure with this tab in front.
  • With several monitors the browser follows the screen the window is on, and mixed refresh rates can behave differently. Move the window fully onto one screen and measure again.
  • Some browsers and operating systems cap animation at 60 Hz even on a faster screen. Also check that your display settings are set to the highest rate, and that the cable and port support it.
  • With variable refresh rate (G-Sync, FreeSync, ProMotion) the screen may change its rate while the page is mostly still, so the measured number can sit below the maximum.

🖥️ The measurement only counts frame times in this tab. Nothing is stored or uploaded.

How It Works

The page times how often your browser draws a frame and turns the median gap into a refresh rate.

  1. 1
    Let it measure
When the page opens it counts animation frames for about 3 seconds. Keep this tab in front and the mouse still.
  2. 2
    Read the rate
The measured Hz is shown with one decimal, plus the closest common rate such as 60, 120 or 144 Hz.
  3. 3
    Check dropped frames
Late frames took more than 1.5 times the median frame time. The tool also estimates how many frames were missed.
  4. 4
    Judge smoothness
Press "Start moving pattern" and watch the bars. Press "Measure again" after changing display or power settings.

Only frame times are counted, inside this browser tab. Nothing is stored or uploaded.
