Decode 5-Band Precision Resistors
Read three-significant-digit resistors used in precision circuits.
Digit 1
Digit 2
Multiplier
Tolerance
💡 Read bands from the end with the tolerance band (often gold or silver) on the right. 4-band resistors use two significant digits; 5- and 6-band use three for tighter precision.
5-Band tips
5-band resistors add a third significant digit for tighter precision — common in measurement and audio gear.
Bands 1-3 are digits, band 4 is the multiplier, band 5 is tolerance (often brown ±1% or red ±2%).
If you can't tell which end is which, the tolerance band is usually slightly separated from the rest.
