BMI = weight (kg) Γ· heightΒ² (mΒ²). A 70 kg person who is 1.75 m tall: 70 Γ· (1.75 Γ 1.75) = 70 Γ· 3.0625 = 22.9 (Normal).
The WHO defines four categories: Underweight (<18.5), Normal (18.5β24.9), Overweight (25β29.9), Obese (30+). These are international standards.
Some health organisations use lower BMI thresholds for Asian populations, where health risks from excess weight appear at lower BMI values.
