Default state: small downward shadow (0 2px 4px / 15%). Active state: reduce to (0 1px 2px / 25%) so the button feels pressed.

Material Design uses 6 elevation levels (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24dp). Each level has a specific dual-shadow recipe — try the "Material 8" preset.
🎯
For floating action buttons, use a much larger blur (24-32px) at 30-40% opacity to suggest hovering above the surface.
🚫
Avoid using shadows on outlined or text-only buttons — they fight the lighter visual weight those styles aim for.
