Facebook recommends 2048 px wide for optimal quality. Larger images get re-compressed by Facebook anyway, so match their recommendation upfront.
Facebook compresses images aggressively. Quality 80 gives you a clean starting point that survives Facebook's own re-compression.
For cover photos and profile pictures, use JPEG at quality 90 since these get more visibility and scrutiny.
